This is a very scarce, pre-fire Chicago map published at 52 La Salle Street in Chicago. Counties are delineated in full hand color, and the transportation network is prominently depicted across the state. A legend at lower right identifies completed railroads, proposed railroads, county seats and towns. A table to the left of the map shows population growth by county and reveals that Cook County's population grew from 144,957 in 1860 to 217,309 in 1865, a 50% increase in only five years. A three page Census of Illinois for 1865 is affixed to the front cover. Folds into brown cloth boards with gilt title on front cover (4.0 x 5.8").

Condition: B
Issued folding with light toning, scattered foxing, and staining. There are a number of fold separations primarily along one horizontal fold that have been mostly closed on verso with archival tape, and a few splits at fold intersections resulting in minor loss of image. Text leaves are misfolded and torn. Covers have light wear and are starting to separate.
