A. A List of Geographical Atlases in the Library of Congress Volumes 5-8, (7.1 x 10.1"). These are the original Washington editions of volumes 5 through 8 of Clara Le Gear's continuation of Philip Lee Phillips' vast and ambitious project. Over 13,100 atlases, arranged chronologically within geographic divisions, are listed across these volumes. Volume 5 is divided into two broad categories: World - Special Atlases and World - General Atlases. Volume 6 focuses on atlases from continents from all over the world with the exception of the Americas, which are covered in Volume 7. Each features full collations, lists of maps, and copious annotations. Volume 8 is the Index to Volume 7. The indexes include cartographers, engravers, and geographic subjects. 8vo, uniformly hardbound in blue cloth with gilt titles on spines. Condition: Contents tight. Covers for volumes 5 and 6 have slight wear and their spines are lightly sunned.
B. United States Atlases - A List of National State, County, City, and Regional Atlases in the Library of Congress, (5.8 x 8.4"). It was produced from original 1950 and 1953 (volumes 1 and 2, respectively) Library of Congress publications. In both volumes, entries are arranged by area (national or state) and then by either topic (for national) or geographic subdivisions such as counties (for states). Nearly 7,000 entries are listed across both volumes. Hardbound, small 8to., dark blue cloth. 746 pp. Condition: Contents and covers near fine.
