This German edition of Melish's important map of the eastern United States was published in Des Schotten Malish Reisen Durch die Vereinten Staaten von Nordamerika... The map shows the extent of the United States past the Mississippi River to the large Missouri Territory. It is filled with early roads, settlements, forts, native villages and towns. The early territories of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana are noted as well as the Northwest Territory which takes in the area that would become Wisconsin and Minnesota. An interesting addition to this map that was not on Melish's original is the very prominent Gulf Stream flowing northeast through the Atlantic. Published by Gerhard Fleischer in Leipzig and engraved by Heinrich Leutermann.
