This lovely view shows Boston from Castle William across the Charles River. The Boston Common, the State House, and numerous steeples can be seen in the city. The American flag is shown flying from Castle William in the foreground, now known as Fort Independence. This engraving is derived from Governor Thomas Pownall's A View of the City of Boston the Capital of New England, circa 1760. Engraved by Paolo Fumagalli and published by Giulio Ferrario in his multi-volume work Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, which was published between 1815 and 1827.
