This full-length portrait of Charles II of England (1630-1685) shows the king in all of his regal glory, with the arms of the Order of the Garter in the background. Charles II came to power after his father, King Charles I, was executed. He was succeeded by his brother James. Used as the frontispiece for Moses Pitt's ill-fated atlas, it was engraved by Robert White, a talented engraver of line portraits born in London in 1645.
