Charming small double-hemisphere map with the peninsular form for California and a huge Terra Australis Incognita. The northwest coast of North America extends far towards Asia, with the names Quivira and Anian along the shore. The mythical Lake Parime appears in South America, and the mythical Lake Chiamay with five southerly-flowing rivers is shown west of China. The corners are decorated with the female representations of the four continents. Tucked between the cusp at bottom is the figure of Atlas surrounded by wind heads and fire, holding the world on his shoulders.
Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographicam was a popular atlas, appearing in over 45 editions during a 100-year period. The first edition was published without maps in the 1620s, and the first edition to include maps was published circa 1641. The various editions were published in different cities throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Nuremberg, and London.
