A. Bar Harbor Mount Desert Island Maine, by U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, dated 1887, black & white (15.1 x 12.6"). Attractive map of this popular tourist destination with more detail than is usually seen on U.S. Coast and Geodetic Surveys. Details the roads, buildings, private property boundaries and a racetrack, in addition to topography and soundings. A proposed breakwater stretches from Round Porcupine Island to very near the mainland. A cross section of the breakwater is illustrated just below. Published to accompany report and signed in plate by Jared A. Smith, Major of Engineers. Condition: Issued folding with a hint of offsetting. (A)
B. Territory Reached by Eastern Steamship Company and Its Connections, by Rand, Avery & Co., circa 1890, printed color (19.4 x 15.5"). This map covers the northeastern United States and Canada from Washington D.C. to Prince Edward Island, with the routes of the Eastern Steamship Company depicted in red overprinting. A second sheet entitled Map of Eastern Steamship Co. Showing Approaches to Mount Desert (21 x 13.5") shows additional detail along the coast of Maine. Condition: There are a few tiny splits at fold intersections. Paper wrappers have light wear. (A)
C. Road Map Mount Desert Island Maine, by Waldron Bates, Edward L. Rand, and Herbert Jaques, dated 1934, printed color (24.0 x 30.0"). This attractive map covers all of Mount Desert Island with the recently created Acadia National Park shaded in green (opened in 1916). The primary purpose of the map is to identify viable roads including primary and secondary roads, private roads, and trails. Contour lines also prominently depict topography. Lithographed by Walker & Co. in Boston. Issued in a paper envelope with title and price on the front panel. Condition: Fine. (A+)
