The newly formed Dakota Territory is a huge unorganized area extending well beyond the Missouri River with no western boundary shown. The area is filled with Indian names: the Gros Ventres, Mandans, Rees, Sihasapa Dacotas, Itazipcho Dacotas, Fox Ridge, and Ohenonpa Dacotas. There is good detail throughout Minnesota with the majority of settlement in the southern regions. The proposed route for "Gov. Steven's Northern Pacific Railroad" crosses Dacotah Territory via a dashed line that originates in St. Cloud.
