This gorgeous chromolithograph of a San Francisco street scene was published in Berlin by R. Wagner. It depicts a bustling California Street with Nob Hill in the background. There are two steam-powered trolley cars passing one another and barrels strewn everywhere. Grace Church and the Parrott Block, a three-story building made of Chinese granite at the corner of California and Montgomery, are among the buildings shown here. The chromolithograph is based on a watercolor by German artist Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-68). Hildebrandt took a trip around the world from 1860 to 1862 and chronicled his adventures with a series of stunning watercolors. Wagner published a collection of these as chromolithographs in 1864. The originals were exhibited a few years later at London's Crystal Palace. Mounted on a backing board, as issued. The publisher's imprint on verso has been trimmed away.
