This view depicts the Raid on Cartagena in 1697. As part of the War of the Grand Alliance, a small fleet of French ships commanded by Bernard Desjean and Baron de Pointis attacked the important port city, successfully defeating the Spanish. This delicately engraved view shows smoke emanating from the city with numerous ships in the bay. In the foreground several Native families watch the battle among lush tropical plants and trees. Drawn by F. Dequevauviller and beautifully engraved by Nicolas-Marie Ozanne (1728-1811), a well-known 18th-century French engraver.
