This is the Martino Fine Books reprint of Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes' monumental history of New York City. Spanning six volumes, Stokes' massive undertaking was originally published from 1915-28. As Stokes states in the preface, the work "represents the result of a two-fold purpose: to collect, to condense, and to arrange systematically and in just proportion, within the confines of a single work, the facts and incidents which are of the greatest consequence and interest in the history of New York City, with special reference to its topographical features and to the physical development of the island." It is still seen as one of the truly essentials research works about the evolution of the city. Stokes was an architect, housing reform crusader, and, eventually, the prints curator for the New York Public Library. There are more than 450 black & white illustrations across the six volumes. Hardbound in red cloth with gilt titles on the spine.
