A. View of Washington City, (5.3 x 2.6"). This small, unused envelope features the Capitol Building as it was completed in 1865 looking toward the Washington Monument at the edge of the Potomac before the swamp around it was filled. Shows fine detail of individual buildings including the Smithsonian Castle. A rare view. Condition: Overall clean on recto with some old glue on verso where it was pasted into a scrapbook. (B+)
B. Washington. D.C., (7.6 x 4.5"). An attractive view of the Washington Monument looking northward, as originally conceived by Robert Mills. Mill's final design removed the colonnade structure at the base due to a lack of funds. Construction of the monument began in 1848, but was not completed until 1884 due to funding issues, the Civil War, and bureaucracy. Issued on a full sheet measuring 8.7 x 11.1". Condition: a crisp engraving on a fragile, clean sheet. (A)
Both views published at 12 Frankfort Street in New York, where Magnus' business was located from 1861-67.
