This is a reduced-sized edition of Arnoldus Montanus' view of Santo Domingo, Hispaniola. The cathedral, the Ozama fortress and other monuments are clearly identifiable, while a large galleon dominates the foreground and a gallows appears at right. The view is surrounded by a frame-style border. This engraving was published in Carel Allard's Orbis Habitabilis Oppida et Vestitus, the first town book to incorporate both maps and costume plates of cities from all over the world, including New York, Paris, Rome, Mexico, Jerusalem, Bantam, and many more.
