This large, striking map of South America includes the Falkland Islands and extends north to Grenada and most of Panama. It features fine detail of settlements, forts, Indian villages, tribal territories, and the coastline. Based upon d'Anville's earlier map of 1748, areas of the interior are left blank where geographical knowledge was scarce or nonexistent. Short notations are included throughout the map, and two mythical lakes still appear: Lake Cassipa and Laguna de los Xareyes. Decorated by a large rococo-style cartouche in the lower right with a dedication to the Duke of Rutland. Engraved by Thomas Kitchin. Printed on three sheets and joined.
