This charming children's book by Elizabeth Hoskyn is comprised of 12 stories derived from medieval folklore, each representing a country in northern Europe. Each lively tale is accompanied by a map of the corresponding country, illustrated by Lilian Lancaster (under her married name Lilian Tennant). The maps serve as visual representations of each story, and depict the following countries/regions: England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Russia, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Denmark. Quarto, 96 pp., 12 chromolithographic plates. Hardbound in original gray cloth covers with a duplicate of the Pied Piper image of Germany pasted onto front cover.

References: Baynton-Williams (Curious Map Book) pp. 200-203.

Condition: B+

The plates are all very bright with occasional soiling and foxing. The text is lightly toned with minor soiling. The title page is foxed. The covers and spine show light wear and soiling with bumped corners, and the spine is beginning to detach at top.
