A. Johnson's California, Also Utah, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, by A.J. Johnson. Johnson's series of maps of the American Southwest is one of the most interesting progressions in 19th century American cartography. The series was produced during a time of rapid westward expansion and changes in territorial boundaries. This edition includes the original four counties of Yavapai, Mohave, Yuma, and Pima in the newly organized Arizona Territory, with Prescott as the capital. The Utah/Nevada border is now at 114° and Arizona and Nevada have their final borders. Early historical details include the United States mail routes, the emigrant roads to California, the proposed railroad route through Utah, Nevada and California, and the Pony Express trail. Historical and statistical information on the verso. According to Ira Lourie's Johnson Map Project, this map was published in 1867 with the correct border between Arizona and Nevada. Please visit his website for more information. Condition: Light toning, minor offsetting, and short centerfold separations at top and bottom that have been closed on verso with archival tape.

B. Johnson's United States, by Johnson and Ward. This map shows a mostly evolved configuration in the western territories. Wyoming is formed but is identified in outline text only. Arizona includes the southern tip of Nevada. The track of the Pony Express, Fremont's route of 1844, the routes of the proposed transcontinental railroads, and locations of army forts are depicted. Surrounded by a decorative border. Condition: Light toning and minor foxing.
