An early, rare view of the city by J. Clark that is the top portion of a letter sheet that served as the letterhead of the U.S. Customs House. Looking from the west, it presents a limited number of buildings in the foreground with a flagpole marking the Customs House, while the Bay is filled with numerous boats and Yerba Buena Island in the background. This is one of the earliest letter sheets produced and is similar in perspective to the Henry Bill version published a few years later. The circa date is based upon a copy in the Online Archive of California with a manuscript date of May 1850.
