This scarce map of France is filled with detail of the rivers, mountains, cities and towns. It is richly adorned with a huge, strapwork title cartouche, a coat of arms, sailing ships, a sea monster and a beautiful compass rose. This is the first state with Hondius' imprint and the date "1600" in the cartouche. French text on verso. This map was only published in 4 editions of Mercator's Atlas, and is thus very rare.

A superb impression on a clean, bright sheet with professional repairs to several short separations along the centerfold. There are two spots of foxing and a small abrasion in the English Channel.
