This map of Crete was published just before the Siege of Candia, a conflict in which Ottoman forces besieged the Venetian-ruled city until their ultimate victory 21 years later. This map is a close copy of Gerard Mercator's map, featuring a large map of the island of Crete depicting towns, villages, rivers, and the topography of the island. The mythological Labyrinth where the Minotaur was confined is shown near the center of the island. Above are smaller inset maps of the islands of Corfu, Zante, Milos, Naxos, Santorini, and Scarpanto flanking the strapwork title cartouche.
