This lovely view shows the capture of St. Lucia by Admiral Samuel Barrington on 30 December 1778. As a result of France's entry into the American Revolutionary War, Britain invaded St. Lucia in order to establish a base to monitor French activity in the area. The view depicts six ships lined up and British troops disembarking to take possession of the island after France's withdrawal. The view is surrounded in a superb frame-style border that gives a 3-D effect. Drawn by William Hamilton and engraved by Thornton. Published in Edward Barnard's The New Comprehensive and Complete History of England.
