This is the complete first volume (of two) of Brue's world atlas that contains a total of 34 maps on 32 sheets. The volume includes 15 maps of the ancient world and 19 of the modern world. The modern maps feature the world (3), Europe (3), Germany (3), France (2), and regional maps of Europe (8). All of the maps bear the imprint "Gravee sous le direction de l'auteur" as well as Brue's embossed seal "Carte encyprotipe du fonds de l'auteur," and are beautifully engraved and surrounded by a decorative keyboard border. Of particular interest are the attractive double-hemisphere world map, a nice pair of single-maps of the polar regions, and a large folding map of France. Hardbound in quarter leather with tips over green marbled boards with gilt title and raised bands on spine. Second edition.

The maps are very good to near fine with some occasional scattered foxing, light toning and/or minor stains. A few of the maps have small fold separations confined to the lower blank margins, and the map of Britain has an edge tear also confined to the blank margin. A former owner's bookplate is present on the front pastedown. Covers have moderate wear.
