Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer who explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. He made three important Pacific explorations: aboard the Coquille, commanded by Duperrey (1822-25); commanding the Astrolabe through the Pacific (1826-29); and commanding the Astrolabe and the Zelee in an exploration of the Pacific and Antarctica (1837-40). This title page comes from an atlas volume chronicling the first voyage of the Astrolabe through the Pacific. It features an engraving by Hacq depicting d'Urville and his men commemorating the monument to La Perouse on the island of Vanikoro. D'Urville located the site where La Perouse shipwrecked back in 1788 and collected debris from the incident. Published by J. Tastu.
