This intricately detailed geological map of the state was published in 1872 in Beers, Comstock & Cline's State Atlas of New Jersey. A table of colors at bottom right identifies 21 geologic units. It also names counties, towns and cities, post offices, railroads, rivers, and more. George H. Cook was the Chair of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy at Rutgers when he was appointed Assistant Geologist of New Jersey in 1853. In 1864, he was appointed State Geologist, a position he filled while concurrently serving as Vice President of the State Scientific College at Rutgers. The college's School of Environmental and Biological Sciences is named after him today.
