This detailed chart centered on Galveston Bay is based on the United States Preliminary Coast Survey conducted between 1855 and 1858. There is a lot of navigational detail, including depth soundings, bottom types, lighthouses, and more. Numerous rivers, bays, and bayous are named, and Galveston the city is depicted as a grid plan. Three insets provide a more in-depth look at the entrance to Galveston, Clopper's Bar, and Red Fish Bar. Engraved by J. & C. Walker, published by the Hydrographic Office of the British Admiralty, and sold by J.D. Potter. The map was first created in 1862, with corrections up to 1883 on this example.
