Oriented with north to the bottom, this map shows Joris van Spilbergen's fleet navigating Magellan's Strait in 1615. His experiences and observations are decoratively illustrated in this map. It shows one of the ships, on which there was a mutiny, turning back and the other five ships entering the strait. Later they were attacked by Indians with clubs and then met with friendly natives with whom they shared wine and fruit. It also shows the various flora and fauna (including a very comic rendition of a penguin) encountered during their exploits. The mountainous terrain of the adjacent shorelines of Tierra del Fuego and Chile are well depicted along with sparse vegetation and a few huts. Based on a map of the same name that was published in de Bry's Grandes Voyages. This appeared in one of the accounts of Spilbergen's and Le Maire's voyages, either Speculum Orientalis Occidentalisque Indiae Navigationum or Oost ende West-Indische Spiegel (both published by Nicolaes van Geelkerchen in 1619), or Miroir Oost & West-Indical (published by Jan Jansson in 1621).
