This elegant plan view of the city depicts the Lines of Communication fortifications established by Parliament during the English Civil War. These fortifications were designed to shield the capital from attacks from the Royalist armies of Charles I. The New Model Army breached the fortifications in 1647, leading Parliament to level them that same year. An extensive key titled "An Explanation of the Several Forts on the Line of Communication" spans two scroll-style cartouches at left and right.
