This is the second state of this very handsome map, dated 1594, but published in 1624. It covers the eastern Mediterranean from Italy eastward into Phoenicia. The map depicts the adventures of Aenaeas' fleet of twenty ships as he roamed the seas for seven years following the destruction of Rome (as most extensively described in the writings of Virgilius). In the end, only seven ships survived, as shown on the lower right portion of the map. The map is adorned with three decorative strapwork cartouches. Latin text on verso.
