In 1800, the French government commissioned explorer Nicolas Baudin to chart the coast of Australia. The expedition lasted from 1800 to 1803 and was one of the most important early explorations of Australia. This handsome title page accompanied the historical atlas by Charles Alexandre Lesueur and Nicolas-Martin Petit, from the multi-volume official account of the voyage. It includes a vignette by M.F. Peron, Lesueur, and Lambert showing kangaroos, emus, and scrolls representing the wealth of knowledge uncovered during the expedition.
