This lot contains three items relating to the Adams-Onis Treaty by which the United States relinquished its claim to Texas, Spain transferred Florida to the U.S. and acknowledged that the Louisiana Purchase extended to the Pacific.
A. Message from the President of the United States Transmitting a Proclamation of a Convention, Between the United States and Spain..., by U.S. Government, published 1819 (5.9 x 8.5"). This is the original transmittal of the treaty to Congress with the 4 page proclamation in both English and Spanish. 16 pages, disbound. Printed by E. de Krafft. Reference: Streeter (Texas) #1075. Condition: Light to moderate toning with a few small chips along the right edge of the title page. (B)
B. Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting a Copy of a Ratified Treaty of Amity, Settlement, and Limits, Between the United States of America and His Catholic Majesty, by U.S. Government, published 1821 (6.0 x 9.5"). This is the official U.S. publication of the ratified treaty in both English and Spanish. 20 pages, disbound. Printed by Gales & Seaton. Reference: Streeter (Texas) #1083. Condition: A bright copy on good paper with a few faint spots of foxing. (A)
C. Memoir Upon the Negotiations Between Spain and the United States of America, Which Led to the Treaty of 1819..., by D. Luis de Onis, published 1821 (5.2 x 8.5"). This is the English translation of Luis de Onis' memoir providing a general account of the United States and describing his negotiations with its government. A scarce item, it is considered one of the most important Texas documents. Translated by Tobias Watkins and printed by E. de Krafft. 152 pages. Hardbound in blue paper boards with cloth spine. Reference: Streeter #1079C. Condition: Missing a signature for pages 81-88 and is therefore considered defective. There is a dampstain in the lower right corner of the first few pages and moderate toning to the last several pages. Page 145-146 has been torn out and there is an ex-library stamp on the copyright page. The hinges are starting and the boards are moderately worn. (B)
