This is an early printing of the Monroe Doctrine in the President’s Message to Congress of December 2, 1823 published in the December 6, 1823 issue of Niles' Weekly Register (pp. 214-220). The editor cogently notes (p. 210): "There is one part of the message…that will attract particular attention. It is where the president suggests the possibility that the 'allied powers' may attempt an extension of their 'political system' to Mexico and the South American states – which, he declares, might be regarded 'as dangerous to our peace and safety'.”
This is the complete volume XXV, covering the period from September 1823 to March 1824 (26 issues). The volume contains several other significant articles including the report on the “Defeat of the Ricaree Indians" (pp. 85-87). Hardbound in a later brown cloth binding with title label on the spine.
