This reference tells the early history of the upper Ohio River through a selection of 54 maps, plans, and views, with text describing their importance and their makers. There are a number historic illustrations and maps made by Indians and Colonists from 1673 to 1783. 132 pages, with numerous black and white plates. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt titles on spine and a dust jacket. Condition: Contents are near fine with a hint of toning along the edges. Covers are near fine. Dust jacket is price clipped with sunning along the spine and edges and some short edge tears. (A)
B. The Mapping of Ohio - The Delineation of the State of Ohio..., by Thomas H. Smith, published 1977 (9.1 x 12.1"). Thomas H. Smith's book reveals the evolution of maps and mapmaking in the state. Starting with the earliest sketches of the French, the book demonstrates how other cartographers viewed the area and filled in the gaps with additional information. More than eighty plates were used to document this evolution. 252 pp. with numerous illustrations. Hardbound with gilt printed maroon cloth and patterned paper boards and a dust jacket protected by Mylar. Condition: Contents and covers are very good with minor, unobtrusive damp stains in the bottom margins. Dust jacket is price clipped with a tear and soiling on the back cover. (B+)
