A. Collecting Old Maps, by Francis J. Manasek, published 1998 (8.8 x 11.3"). A major reference work for those seriously interested in starting a map collection. In the preface, the author states that he is writing for people who wish to acquire collectable maps, and he therefore uses maps that are available and not too expensive as his examples. The practical book addresses the issues of forgeries, condition, identification, research, purchasing, and collection care. A valuable reference for the novice collector as well as long-time serious cartophiles. First edition. 314 pp., 250 illustrations in black and white and color. Hardbound in green cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine and an illustrated dust jacket. Condition: Contents tight with the faintest hint of toning along the edges.
B. Maps and Map-Makers, by R.V. Tooley, published 1961 (7.6 x 10.0"). This is the the third impression of the 2nd edition of this standard work for any collector's library. It provides information on the principal map makers and publishers throughout the history of cartography. Published by Bonanza Books. 140 pp. with 104 illustrations, with some in color. Hardbound in blue cloth with gilt titles on spine and a dust jacket protected by Mylar. Condition: Contents are near fine with a couple spots of minor soiling. Covers have faint shelf wear. Dust jacket is lightly soiled.
