This visually striking chart by British artist Ernest Clegg shows the planned sailing area for the 1937 America's Cup race with vignettes of past winning yachts and current contenders. Illustrated yachts include the two J-Class yachts that competed - Endeavour II and Ranger - as well as other yachts that were built for the competition but were not selected for the race (Endeavour, Rainbow, and the Yankee). The past winning yachts illustrated are America (1851), Thistle (1887), Valkrie II (1893), Shamrock II (1901, Puritan (1885), Columbia (1899-1901), and Reliance (1903). Other historical information includes a "History of Schooner 'America'" and "History of the Races for America's Cup" starting in 1851 until 1934. Also beautifully detailed with yachting pennants and other nautical imagery. Ernest Clegg had originally created this work for the 1934 America's Cup Race, and subsequently updated it for the 1937 race. This edition was published in the 7 August 1937 edition of the Illustrated London News and includes a short article about the America's Cup adjacent to the engraving. On verso are a captioned image from the Spanish Civil War and an advertisement for Schweppes.
