This enlightening document by Alfred Vail is “illustrated by fourteen wood engravings” showing in detail how the telegraph operates, including the latest version of the Morse code. Vail was a mechanical engineer who brought technical and financial assistance to Morse’s telegraph project. In return he received a 25% interest in the American rights and 50% of the foreign rights.
