This is the second edition of the fifth volume of Lettres Edifantes et Curieuses, a 34-volume collection of letters from Jesuit missionaries. Volume V includes Father Kino's important map of the Gulf of California, the first map to accurately depict the region, in particular the relative positions of the Colorado and Gila rivers and the correct localization of the rivers, valleys, and mountains of part of Sonora and Arizona. Kino's map was intended to disprove the California as an Island theory, but instead actually fueled the controversy and thus the map was reprinted many times. Engraved by Inselin. An essential map to any collection of California or the American Southwest.
The volume also includes Father Francisco Maria Piccolo's Memoire Touchant l'Estat des Missions, Nouvellement Establies dans la Californie. Considered to be the first printed account of California, Piccolo's work served as a major source for early histories and ethnographies of Baja California. Published in Paris by Nicolas Le Clerc. 16 mo, hardbound in speckled leather with raised bands, gilt tooling, and red leather title label on spine.
