This superb bird's-eye plan of the town of Cassel was published in Blaeu's town book of the Netherlands. A border town between France and the Netherlands, Cassel was repeatedly captured by the Spanish and Dutch throughout the 17th century. There is wonderful detail of the town's fortifications and buildings, with a key in the banner title cartouche at top identifying 26 places of interest. Two windmills can be seen. The view extends to show the surrounding countryside with farmers, shepards, and people walking the roads. Four coats of arms float above the plan, including the arms of Cassel, the Habsburg Netherlands, and the House of Hornes (the dedicatee). The plan was drawn by Vedastus du Plovich. Dutch text on verso.
