This finely detailed panoramic view of Cairo by H.W. Brewer was published as a supplement to the June 17, 1882 edition of The Graphic. The "crisis" of the title refers to the escalating tensions in the lead-up to British conquest of Egypt, also known as the Anglo-Egyptian War. In 1881, the Egyptian nationalist Ahmed 'Urabi initiated a coup against Khedive Tewfik Pasha. The British and French backed Pasha's authority, eventually sending warships off the coast of Alexandria in May 1882. On June 11 (a week before this map's publication), an anti-Christian riot broke out in Alexandria, leading to the Bombardment of Alexandria and the beginning of the war in July 1882. The view centers on the Citadel of Cairo and extends to show the whole city including Old Cairo and the outskirts. Text outside the neatline at top and bottom identifies key locations. The pyramids of Giza can be seen in the background at left. The Graphic was a British weekly illustrated newspaper created in 1869 by William Luson Thomas, a successful artist and social reformer.
