This document was signed by Frederick North, also known as Lord North, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1770 to 1782, through most of the American War of Independence. This document was signed on 13 May 1771 while he was Prime Minister, and serves as an endorsement by North to pay Richard Stevenson. The document reads in part: "Richard Stevenson One of the Messengers of his Majesty’s Court of Exchequer... for his Travel and Charges in December 1770 and January 1771 to Deliver several blank parchment Books Issued out of the King’s Remembrancer’s Office... Directed to the Customers, Comptrollers and Searchers of the Ports underwritten for Entering all Goods and Merchandizes as well coming into as going out of the said Ports....” A cancellation mark runs through the majority of the document as well as North’s large, bold signature. The folding sheet includes the docketed integral address leaf.
