This lot contains two important Mormon war documents:
A. Document Showing the Testimony Given Before the Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of the State of Missouri, on the Trial of Joseph Smith, Jr., and Others, for High Treason..., from Sen. Doc. 189, 25th Congress, 2nd Session, published 1841. While no trial took place, this testimony details the Mormon-Missouri War of 1838 that resulted in the expulsion of the Mormons from Missouri. 47 pages. Octavo, disbound. Condition: Near fine. (A)
B. The Utah Expedition. Message from the President …Transmitting Reports … Relative to the Military Expedition Ordered into the Territory of Utah, from H.R. Doc. 71, 35th Congress, 1st Session, published 1858. This report is on the later and better known Mormon War. According to Howes, it contains the “authoritative reports of General Johnston and his subordinate officers on operations connected with the ‘Mormon War.'" President Buchanan’s message was in response to the House resolution requesting information on “the question as to how far said Brigham Young and his followers are in a state of rebellion or resistance to the government of the United States.” Skeptical of the motives of the expedition, the Mormons prepared for armed conflict. After a year of skirmishes, but no major battles, a negotiated settlement ended the hostilities. 215 pages. Octavo, disbound. Condition: Light toning. (B+)
