This 52 page document consists of a series of five articles written by Thomas Sturgis in response to the Great Sioux War of 1876. Sturgis, a prominent Wyoming rancher, had first hand knowledge of the Indian situation on the frontier and wanted to "correct some false ideas generally held at the East, concerning the people of this country and the trials they are called to endure." Sturgis' articles include "The Sioux", "Weakness of the Reservation System", "Treaties", "How the Indians are Fed", and "Status of the Warlike Tribes: Why Their Control Should be Transferred to the War Department." Eberstadt states that "his account of the war and his suggestions for the handling of the situation are clear and sagacious." Rebound in maroon cloth with gilt title on the front cover. The original blue front wrapper is present and bound with the text.
