This document was signed by Antonio Maceo Grajales, who was second-in-command of the Cuban Army of Independence against Spain and known as the "Titan of Bronze" after being wounded several times in battle. Maceo earned a reputation as one of the leading guerrilla leaders in Latin America in the 19th century. In this document, written in Spanish and dated 19 October 1896, Maceo makes a military appointment. The text translates in part as: "The main fort has assigned a corporal grade to the soldier Miguel Cavia for his services to the cause of independence. For the purposes of credentials, this was expedited at Patria and Liber." Maceo wrote this letter less than 2 months before being fatally shot in combat with the Spanish on 7 December 1896.
