This is the eighth annual report of the Geological and Geographical Survey that is focused primarily on Colorado exploration during the 1874 season. The 515 page report consists of geological reports by Hayden (Colorado), A.C. Peale (Colorado) and Samuel Aughey (Nebraska). Additional reports include paleontology, archaeology, zoology and topography. The volume is profusely illustrated with related figures, plates, and maps including the Preliminary Map of Central Colorado (22.5 x 25.0") by Henry Gannett. This map covers the mountainous part of the state west of Denver to the area of present-day Grand Junction. The map shows incredibly detailed topography by hachure and reflects the team's surveying progress. Other maps of interest include Geological Map of Colorado Springs and Vicinity (9.25 x 11.50"), Preliminary Map of the Eastern Base of the Rocky Mountains (10.3 x 47.0"), and Map of the Elk Mountains Colorado (18.3 x 18.0"). Hardbound in brown cloth with gilt tile on spine.
