A. Persia sive Sophorum Regnum cum Armenia Assyria Mesopotamia et Babilonia, by Philipp Cluver, from Introductio in Universam Geographicam, published 1697 (10.1 x 8.1"). This charming small map covers the region from the Mediterranean to Pakistan, including the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The map is fully engraved with mountains, forests, and many ancient place names. It is adorned with a decorative title cartouche.
Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographicam was a popular atlas, appearing in over 45 editions during a 100-year period. The first edition was published without maps in the 1620s, and the first edition to include maps was published circa 1641. The various editions were published in different cities throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Nuremberg, and London. This map is from a London edition, with the majority of the maps re-engraved by John Senex. Reference: Mickwitz & Miekkavaara #45-36; Shirley (BL Atlases) T.CLUV-8a #36.
