This detailed map shows the route of Samuel Baker into the interior of Africa. While fellow explorer Captain J.H. Speke was the first European to see Lake Victoria in 1858, Baker was the first to witness Lake Albert on March 16, 1864. These two lakes together form the primary sources of the Nile River. Baker would later be named the Governor of the Equatorial Nile Basin in 1869.
