A. The Cartography of North America 1500-1800, by Pierluigi Portinaro and Franco Knirsch, published 1987 (9.8 x 13.1"). This essential and nicely illustrated cartographic reference is filled with biographical sketches of major cartographers. It presents reproductions of authentic maps from the first three centuries of the mapping of North America reflecting an unfolding story of daring exploration, tenacious settlement, and fierce colonial rivalry. 320 pp. containing 180 extensively captioned maps, nearly all in full-color and over 90 supplementary illustrations. Published by Chartwell Books, Edison NJ, 1987. Condition: Contents are tight with a hint of damp staining at the top of some of the pages. Covers and dust jacket have minor shelf wear along the edges and minor damp stains at top.
B. From Sea Unto Sea - Art & Discovery Maps of Canada, by Joe C.W. Armstrong, published 1982 (10.7 x 15.8"). This reference contains 38 early maps of Canada or North America relating to early exploration in Canada. Over half are in full color, with extensive cartographic and historical references for each. The book explores the maps and adventures of Champlain, Hudson, Hearne, Mackenzie, Cook, Vancouver, and many others. Folio, hard bound in dark blue cloth with dust jacket. Condition: Contents are near fine with a hint of toning along the edges of text. Covers have some sunning and minor shelf wear along the edges. There is some light soiling and a couple minor tears to the dust jacket.
