This 406-page volume was written by Israel Daniel Rupp and represents an important gathering of accounts of the early expeditions against Indians in the region, massacres in border settlements, and the siege of frontier forts. The volume also contains the journals of General Washington, St. Clair, Weiser, the letters of General Braddock, county histories, and more. Included within the text is a folding plan of Fort Duquesne (10.7 x 9.1") and a Sketch of Col. Bouquet's Engagement with 400 Indians (10.7 x 16.2"). Howes describes Rupp's book as a "historical treasure-house." Octavo, rebound in full leather with gilt title label on spine. Includes the author's inscription on the front free endpaper: "Presented to D.L. Mayes by the Writer, Sept. '47."
References: Howes #R-505.
Condition: B+
The two folding maps have light toning and scattered foxing. The "Sketch of Col. Bouquet's Engagement" also has a 1.5" binding tear at right with an associated small chip, resulting in small loss of border. Text is very clean and tight with one leaf (publisher's notice) in facsimile, and an inscription on the front free endpaper. Rebound with minor shelf wear.
