This lovely lithographic view by Swiss-born artist John Caspar Wild shows Blockley Almshouse, a four-building complex for Philadelphia's indigent population consisting of a poorhouse, a hospital, an orphanage, and an insane asylum. Designed by architect William Strickland, the almshouse opened in 1834, just four years before this view was published. The Schuylkill River flows in the foreground, while the Market Street Bridge, Paul Beck's shot tower, and the Eastern State Penitentiary appear in the distance. Printed by the famous firm of J.T. Bowen.
