A. Percici sive Sophorum Regni Tipus, by Ortelius/Galle, from Epitome Theatri Orteliani, published 1589 (4.3 x 3.1"). This handsome little map covers the Persian Empire between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf and includes much of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan. The map is enclosed in the rope-like border. Latin text on verso. The first pocket version of Ortelius' Theatrum was published by Philippe Galle in 1577 as Spieghel der Werelt. Galle began a new edition with new plates, commonly known as the Epitome, in 1588. Galle's miniature atlas was quite popular, and was published in editions until 1602. From 1583 he gradually introduced a new set of maps, both adding to and replacing the originals. The plates were then passed to Jan B. Vrients, who retouched some of the plates and published the final editions of the Epitome in 1601 and 1602. References: King (2nd Ed.) pp. 60-61 & 88-89; Van der Krogt (Vol. III) #8200:331. Condition: A crisp impression on a bright sheet with remnants of hinge tape on verso.

B. Persia ex Adamo Oleario, by Philipp Cluver, circa 1661 (4.8 x 4.6"). This lovely miniature map of Persia was first published in Daniel Elzevir's 1661 pocket-size edition of Cluver's Introductionis in Universam Geographiam..., with subsequent editions appearing until 1717. It is a reduced copy of the Adam Olearius map of the region. The map covers the region from the Mediterranean to Pakistan, including a squat Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and part of the Arabian Peninsula.

Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographicam was a popular atlas, appearing in over 45 editions during a 100-year period. The first edition was published without maps in the 1620s, and the first edition to include maps was published circa 1641. The various editions were published in different cities throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Nuremberg, and London. References: Shirley (BL Atlases) T.CLUV-4a #34. Condition: A crisp impression issued folding with remnants of hinge tape on verso and some small binding holes in the left blank margin.
