A. Bird’s-Eye View of Kyoto and Its Environs, by Hoei, circa 1947 (28.8 x 10.1"). A lovely Japanese bird's-eye view of Kyoto, the capital of Japan until Emperor Meiji moved it to Tokyo in 1868. Highly detailed, the view shows the street grid pattern of the city, individual buildings, roads, railroads, bridges, and rugged mountains in the background. While the map is entirely in Japanese other than the title, the verso contains text about the city in both English and Japanese. Folds into pictorial paper wrappers with photographic scenes on the inside of the wrapper (4.7 x 10.7"). Condition: A clean example with archival repairs to a 5" tear along the left border where the map is attached to the wrapper. Light wear and soiling to wrappers.

B. [Kyoto], circa 1910 (7.9 x 6.5"). A small Chinese woodblock map of Kyoto showing the street grid pattern and canals of the city. Condition: There is a short centerfold separation at right that has been closed on verso with archival tape and one tiny hole along the left border.

References: Rumsey #11110.

Condition: B+
