This interesting engraving presents a walled village of the Fula people of the Senegambia region in West Africa. A key at top left identifies the guard-house for the cattle, cotton and corn crops, and a native carrying a log on his head. It is based on the account of the English travel writer and Royal African Company clerk Francis Moore. A similar engraving (also by Basire) with a slightly different title (View of a Fûlî Town & Plantations About It, from Moore) appeared in the second volume of John Green's A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels, published by Thomas Astley in 1745.
